DVD producer ordered to pay ex-DPP chair for libel

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taipei district court judge convicted a DVD producer of libeling Shih Ming-teh, a former Democratic Progressive Party chairman, and ordered him to pay NT$6 million in damages.

Lin Yi-fang was also told to run an apology in ten newspapers, including the United Daily News and the China Times, for calling Shih a "political cowboy."

The Chinese translation of "cowboy" means a "midnight cowboy" in the United States.

In a written verdict, the judge ruled Lin was guilty of placing libelous ads depicting Shih as a "political cowboy, who should go back to a cabaret to hold a news conference."

Shih filed a libel suit against the DVD producer shortly after the ads appeared on August 12, 2006 while he was leading a March of One Million Redshirts to demand that President Chen Shui-bian resign to take responsibility for a spate of corruption scandals involving himself, his wife, their son-in-law and his close associates.

The DVD producer said he would appeal the verdict.
