TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei criminal investigation police yesterday nabbed a suspect in Taipei who

had allegedly extorted 500,000 renminbi from a Taiwnese investors in mainland China and failed an attempt to kill the victim.

The suspect, 51 and named Wu Kuan-ting, is a resident of the Taoyuan County, northern Taiwan, and is the elder brother of a former female Taoyuan county councilor Wu Pao-yu. He was arrested when trying to attend a court session for his involvement in an embezzlement case. Police said that Wu and the other two accomplices allegedly kidnapped a Taiwanese man, surnamed Chiang and doing business in Zhuhai of the Guangdong Province, on Nov. 19, 2007, and demanded a ransom of 500,000 renminbi, equivalent to NT$2.2 million.

But after obtaining the ransom, the gangsters tried on Nov. 21 to kill Chiang, who finally managed to flee and return to Taiwan the following day.

Chiang didn't report the criminal case to the police until early March, but the police has since investigated the case and successfully arrested Wu and two women named Lin Hui-ying and Lin Pao-chin, who allegedly helped Wu remit money back to Taiwan from mainland China.

The three suspects are being prosecuted for violating the Banking Act, Money Laundry Act and kidnapping.
