Eva Salazar-Liu, coordinator for the night’s event, quoted President-elect Ma Ying-jeou’s alleged comment that the school is a “miracle of Taipei,” in praise of the interactive and multicultural attitude adopted by the community. Sitting side by side, members of Taipei institute — made up of 57 different nationalities — received new members, while also paying their respects to those departing contributors on their way to new things. Acting as a key figure in helping bring the originally-segregated schools together, parent-teacher Eva Salazar-Liu expressed her satisfaction about her commitments, which the school recognized last night with an award. “I really worked hard for it,” she said to The China Post before receiving the award. Though centered on European culture and languages, Salazar-Liu says the school is really “a European school in a Taiwanese context,” which doesn’t try to segregate itself completely from Taiwan society, instructing students in both Taiwan culture and Mandarin. However, maintaining European roots is also a key focus for the highly active school, which hosts such cultural celebrations as Carnival, a “non-alcoholic” Oktoberfest as well as their largest event, the Christmas Bazaar, which former community organizer said attracts around 6000 people each year. |
