TES celebrates, looks back on another year

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- As the school year draws to a close, Taipei European School (TES) looked back on another year last night at their annual Gala Evening, recognizing the hard work of the tightly-knit community, which coordinators remarked has become more cohesive since four separate continental schools were first united.

Introducing the event in the five school languages of English, Chinese, French, German and Dutch, the multilingual staff and crowd applauded the diversity of the environment fostered by the school.

Eva Salazar-Liu, coordinator for the night’s event, quoted President-elect Ma Ying-jeou’s alleged comment that the school is a “miracle of Taipei,” in praise of the interactive and multicultural attitude adopted by the community. Sitting side by side, members of Taipei institute — made up of 57 different nationalities — received new members, while also paying their respects to those departing contributors on their way to new things.

Acting as a key figure in helping bring the originally-segregated schools together, parent-teacher Eva Salazar-Liu expressed her satisfaction about her commitments, which the school recognized last night with an award. “I really worked hard for it,” she said to The China Post before receiving the award.

Though centered on European culture and languages, Salazar-Liu says the school is really “a European school in a Taiwanese context,” which doesn’t try to segregate itself completely from Taiwan society, instructing students in both Taiwan culture and Mandarin.

However, maintaining European roots is also a key focus for the highly active school, which hosts such cultural celebrations as Carnival, a “non-alcoholic” Oktoberfest as well as their largest event, the Christmas Bazaar, which former community organizer said attracts around 6000 people each year.
