Kaohsiung man indicted for intimidating Taipei mayor

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man from Kaohsiung City was indicted yesterday on charges of intimidation and hindering public security for sending threatening letters to Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin late last year.

According to the indictment issued by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, suspect Chuang Shun-kui allegedly sent a threatening letter containing a pair of sheep testicles to Hau in protest of the Taipei Election Commission’s stance on the voting method used in the Jan. 12 legislative elections.

Chuang, who mailed the letter to Hau by private courier on Nov. 29, 2007, was angry because the city insisted that voters cast ballots in the legislative polls and on concurrently held referendums in two separate steps, in defiance of Central Election Commission (CEC) orders that all ballots be picked up in one single step.
