CAL gives NT$1 mil. to kids suffering from AIDS

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan-based China Airlines (CAL) has donated NT$ 1 million (US$ 32,786) to a charity organization to help build shelters and provide other services for children suffering from HIV or AIDS, CAL Chairman and President Ringo Chao announced yesterday.

Chao made the remarks at a donation ceremony at the charity, Harmony Home Association, Taiwan, which was attended by government officials from the Department of Health under the Executive Yuan and Taipei city’s Department of Social Welfare.

Harmony, founded in 2003, is a non-profit organization aimed at helping people living with HIV or AIDS, providing them with shelter, medical assistance, hospice care, counseling, and support and training programs.

It is sheltering a total of 26 children suffering from HIV or AIDS, some of whom are orphans, while others have parents in jail.

With its donation, CAL became the first company assisting children suffering from the disease in Taiwan. All previous funding for organizations like Harmony came from the government.

“We at China Airlines are fully committed to fulfilling our corporate social responsibilities,” said Chao. “We hope this move will generate additional help and support from the public and other corporations.”
