Visiting choir joins Taipei charity drive

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A visiting children’s choir from Uganda has joined an activity with elementary students in Taipei City inviting support for international humanitarian care from local children, one of the event organizers said yesterday.

A day earlier, the choir visited the Taipei Municipal Ren Ai Elementary School, one of the participants in the activity launched by World Vision Taiwan (WVT) and the Cimage Taiwan Film Co. to promote care for the disadvantaged and support for international humanitarian care among local children.

The students watched a film called War Dance, which tells the story of how three war-affected Ugandan children struggled to find hope through music and dance.

“We Taiwanese children should learn from the spirit of the three children in the film, who did not give up their dreams in spite of their difficulties, “ said Liang Chih-yuan, a fifth-grader at the school.

The students were also invited to donate NT$5 after watching the film, with the money raised to help orphans in countries such as Rwanda and Palestine, a WVT executive said.

The Watoto Children’s Choir, composed of 18 orphans aged between 7 and 13, whose parents have died of AIDS, come from Watoto village in Uganda. Founded by a pastor in the 1990s, the village houses 1,600 AIDS orphans and war-affected children. Watoto means “children” in the Swahili language. During the activity, the choir members and the local students prayed for a peaceful world filled with love. The choir also invited local students to take part in its music and dance performance, the executive said.

The choir’s concerts in Taiwan, titled “With Love, With Hope, “ will be staged in Taipei, Hsinchu, Yilan, Changhua, Tainan and Kaohsiung from March 28 to April 6.

Established in 1994, the choir has toured the world, and visited Taiwan for the first time in 2006. The choir members share their life stories through their music, which covers a soulful blend of African rhythm, contemporary gospel and ethnic dance.
