Student seriously injured in failed suicide attempt

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A 12th grader was seriously injured yesterday after he suddenly jumped over the fence outside his classroom located on the fifth floor at the affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, following a brief argument with his mother.

The 18-year-old teenage boy, surnamed Lee, leapt from the terrace in front of his classroom at 10:56 a.m., and landed on another terrace located on the second floor in the same building, stated a spokesperson from the school.

Earlier that morning, Lee’s mother visited him to inquire about the proceedings for his application to medical school; the boy and his mother then engaged in a verbal argument outside the classroom, while students were still in class.

Lee acted impulsively when his mother was preparing to leave, suggested the spokesperson, who noted that medical emergency units were contacted directly by the boy’s classmates as his mother was still under the shock of the incident.

The victim was unconscious when he arrived at Ren Ai Municipal Hospital, but had already regained consciousness before noon. He might stay in intensive care for another 48 hours, even though his wounds are not life-threatening, hospital authorities said.

Lee suffered serious injuries to his legs and spine and will need to undergo surgery, a doctor at the hospital’s emergency room added.

According to the school’s spokesperson, Lee is a dedicated student with a reserved and quiet personality.

In the afternoon, the school instructed its teachers to talk with the students in order to help relieve them from the psychological pressure resulting from the incident.
