Tibetans in Taiwan to stage 49-hour fast

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tibetans in Taiwan will stage a 49-hour fast starting Friday afternoon on Liberty Square in Taipei City to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule that saw Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama flee to northern India, where he set up a government-in exile, a local Tibetan group source said.

Tashi Tsering, vice president of the Tibetan Youth Association, said the fast to be staged on Liberty Square in front of the National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall will start at 3 p.m. Friday and end at 4 p.m. Sunday.

“As China continues to arrest Tibetans following its recent bloody crackdown on Tibetan demonstrators, we are hopeful that the fast will arouse global attention to Tibet’s plight, “ Tsering said, adding that Taiwan people are welcome to join the fast and pray for Tibetans.

Tibetan expatriates have been staging a sit-in at Liberty Square since last week, with many local civic groups and rock bands joining the activity to lend their support for Tibetan cause.
