Taipei Rotarians launch Mongolian water project

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Rotary Club of Taipei Shen Yang officially handed a contract to a sister club in Mongolia for a water development project under which Shen Yang will help the Mongolian people build water towers and drill deep-water wells in rural areas.

During the official ceremony, Chan Ming-chu, head of the Rotary Club of Taipei Shen Yang, presented an agreement to Eric Erdenebat Rentsen, incoming president of the Rotary Club of Niislel in Mongolia, guaranteeing the project to help relieve water shortage problems in Mongolia.

Chan expressed the hope that the project would be completed by the end of this year to provide drinking water for some 3,500 Mongolian residents.

At present, some rural Mongolians need to walk distances ranging from four to 1,200 meters to haul water on wagons, and even then they can only carry about 40 to 100 liters each time, Chan said.

The project follows Shen Yang’s work last September of transporting more than 420,000 crystal tiles to Mongolia for the construction of a huge mosaic of Mongolia’s great Emperor Genghis Khan (1162-1227) at Ulan Bator’s international airport, Chan added.
