TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Indigenous lawmakers lambasted the Taipei County government in northern Taiwan yes

terday for forcibly tearing down the illegal dwellings of local indigenous peoples and ignoring their human rights.

The criticism came after county officials and 100 policemen dismantled houses of members of the Sanying Tribe Feb. 29 that were built illegally near the Dahan River years ago.

The county government said it had built an indigenous cultural community in Sansia Township just 200 meters from where the dwellings were destroyed to accommodate the expelled tribe members and that many indigenous residents had already moved into the community.

However, legislators said at a legislative session that county officials disregarded protests from the remaining tribe members and forcibly demolished their living quarters.
