TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man in Taipei City has been caught for allegedly faking a car accident in an att

empt to extort compensation from a woman driver, a local newspaper reported yesterday.

Hsu Chia-sheng, 34, was arrested by police passing by while he was negotiating with a woman over being compensated for being "hit" by her car, according to the United Evening News. Hsu told the woman that he was the head of a gang and threatened her to pay a compensation of NT$1,000, the paper said.

But the woman refused to provide police with any information concerning the case for fear of Hsu's revenge, the paper added. The paper did not say whether police had pressed charges against the man.

Extortionists are said to fake car accidents targeting drunk drivers who have been drinking at nightclubs, as these drivers are more likely to pay compensation sums cheaper than the heavy fines of NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 and prosecution that would incur from drink driving, the paper added.
