Lawmaker fined for calling ex-DPP chair a ‘loyal dog’

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taiwan High Court yesterday fined a Kuomintang legislator NT$2,000 for calling a former Democratic Progressive Party chairman a dog.

The high court returned a final verdict that overturned a district court acquittal for Hung Hsiu-chu, and ordered the KMT legislator to pay the fine. The high court found Hung guilty of publicly insulting former DPP chief Yu Shyi-kun by calling him a “loyal dog” during a TV talk show. The district court had argued in favor of Hung, saying she was only joking and was not directly using vulgar language to publicly insult Yu.

But the high court said it is a common understanding that comparing someone to a dog is meant to belittle that person.

Hung responded to the verdict by saying that the high court judges found her guilty probably because they did not like dogs and did not know how lovely they were.

She said she would be willing to send the judges dogs so that after keeping them for some time they could understand that many people were worse than dogs.
