Revelers warned not to litter for Lantern Festival

TAIPEI -- The Taipei city government urged the public yesterday not to litter in the upcoming Lantern Festival, warning that violators will face fines of up to NT$6,000 (US$195).

24 classified recycling spots staffed by 50 environmental protection activists will be set up at the square of the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall — the main venue of this year’s Lantern Festival celebrations — and its neighborhood. The festive activities were kicked off Friday and will run through Feb. 24.

Visitors to the festival are not to throw rubbish or garbage in the hall’s compound and its neighboring areas. Fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$6,000 can be imposed. During the 2007 Lantern Festival, municipal officials issued 320 littering tickets.
