Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan becomes grandfather

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Honorary Chairman Lien Chan of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) finally became a grandfather yesterday, as his daughter-in-law Tsai Yi-shan gave birth to a baby boy in the afternoon.

Tsai, wife of Lien Sheng-wen, the senior Lien’s eldest son and member of the KMT’s Central Standing Committee, gave birth at Chungshan Hospital located on Section 4 of Jen Ai Road in Taipei at 3:10 p.m., fufulling the senior Lien’s dream of becoming a grandfather.

Chu Ying-hong, vice president of the hospital, told reporters that the baby boy was very healthy, weighing 3,500 grams.

Giving birth to her first child, Tsai was nervous and excited, while her husband, family members and doctors made well-rounded preparations to welcome the birth of the baby, Chu continued.

Tsai is expected to be allowed to go to a recovering center in a few days.

When Lien Chan made an historical visit to mainland China in late April 2005, students at an elementary school of Lien’s hometown in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, warmly welcomed him by singing “Grandfather Lien, you finally return!”

Ever since, “Grandfather Lien” has been a famous nickname for Lien Chan.
