Wrong corpse cremated by mistaken family: police

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Peng Chia-yang, a homeless man thought to have frozen to death, was seen walking at the Taipei Railway Station yesterday, shortly after his supposed cremation.

As it turns out, the wrong body was cremated as Peng’s due to his family mistakenly identifing the corpse as that of Peng.

According to police, a person was found frozen to death in a public toilet in Taoyuan County Friday. The body was later identified by family members as that of 39-year-old Peng. It was subsequently cremated. When police stationed at Taipei Railway Station heard of Peng’s death and cremation, they were all terrified as they had been seeing Peng on a regular basis.

“There are some 380 homeless people living in Taipei Railway Station, and we keep profiles of them to make sure nothing happens to them,” said Chen Chun-kai, an officer of the Taiwan Railway Administration police. “We see Peng all the time. When we heard about his death, we thought we were seeing a ghost.”

The police now face a dilemma — they can’t find out the identity of the person who was cremated. “It’s pretty hard to look into that at this point,” Chen said.
