Taipei County gets head start on Cleanup Week

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei County got a head start on National Cleanup Week on Saturday, with Magistra

te Chou Hsi-wei and Sanchong Mayor Li Chian-long leading over 100 volunteers, sanitation workers and county residents in taking part in a cleanup activity at Datong Park in Sanchong.

The activity was held despite the absence of Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Minister Winston Dang following the mass resignation of the Cabinet on Thursday.

The EPA holds National Cleanup Week each year ahead of the Chinese New Year holidays, and it will be held from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 this year. Due to the resignation of the Cabinet, however, the EPA canceled plans to send staff members to various cleanup activities organized around the country.

Picking up the slack, Magistrate Chou urged county residents to take action in making their living environments cleaner and more comfortable and make the new year a happy one.

In Saturday's activity, Chou and other participants spent several hours picking up litter at Datong Park, cleaning out the gutters of surrounding streets and sweeping up at the city's multipurpose stadium.
