TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Those who park their vehicles at public parking spaces in Taipei County, northern

Taiwan, for advertising purposes for a period of more than 15 days will see their parking fee doubled from the ordinary level, according to a resolution made by the Taipei County Council.

The county council has recently ratified a set of revisions to the statute governing the collection of parking fees at public parking lots, proposed by the Bureau of Transportation under the Taipei County Government.

Lin Chung-chang, acting director of the transportation bureau, said his bureau will submit the revisions to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for final approval. Line expected the revisions to be put into practice within one and a half months.

Under the revisions, those vehicles without numerical plates or carrying fake or fabricated plates won't be allowed to park in public parking spaces, while violators will see their vehicles towed by police, Lin said.

In addition, a fine of NT$600 to NT$1,200 will be imposed on those who park their cars in disabled parking spaces, making Taipei County the first county to impose such fines.

Lin said that the original statute was short of effective regulations to counter the undesirable practice of parking vehicles in public parking lots for advertising purposes over a period of more than 15 days.

In addition, quite a few advertising vehicles without identification plates have stayed on public parking lots for over 15 days, but the county government can't collect any parking fees from owners of such vehicles, because the parking management unit isn't able to issue parking fee bills.

To counter, the county transportation bureau came up with a set of revisions to effectively cope with such undesirable situations.
