Taipei high school wins Young Diplomats 2007

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School has won the national Young Diplomats 2007 cha

mpionship, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) official said yesterday.

The contest, organized by the MOFA, the Ministry of Education, and local Formosa Television (FTV), drew participants from 133 senior high school teams from around the country, the official said.

Second and third places went to the Kaohsiung Municipal Senior High School in southern Taiwan, and National Cingshuei Senior High School in Taichung County, central Taiwan, the official said.

The top three teams will win prize money of NT$50,000 (US$1,540), NT$30,000, and NT$20,000, respectively, and travel abroad to perform their diplomatic missions during winter vacation, the official said.

A total of 18 groups were selected in the preliminary rounds of the contest held in October and November, the official said.

Participants in the final round, held Dec. 15, went through three rounds of competition including a group talent show, impromptu speech,and quiz, with questions ranging from information on international organizations, diplomatic allies, international etiquette, to global political and economic situations, the official said.

The organizers also commended another five teams for their excellent performances in the final round of the contest, the official said, adding that the final round was recorded and will be aired on FTV Dec. 30.
