Sedan slides down to sea from park; one lover killed

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A sedan parked at a seaside park in Keelung slid 12 meters down into the sea below yesterday, killing a lover in a rendezvous.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Police identified the victim as Wu Chung-kuo, 45, of Keelung. He was dating Wu Hsiu-feng, 43, also of Keelung, police investigators said. They went together in a sedan to the seaside park in suburban Keelung shortly before dawn. The sedan was parked near the cliff, where there are no guard railings.

Apparently, Wu Chung-kuo did not apply the handbrakes, investigators said, before he and his girlfriend napped on the front seats. She was awakened by her lover, who shouted,”The car is sliding down. Jump out.”

The woman opened the car door and leapt off. She fell into the sea, but was able to come out of the water on her own. Her feet were wounded, however.

Wu Hsiu-feng got ashore. The car was not washed off into the sea. Firemen rushed to the scene on receipt of calls for help from Wu Hsiu-feng, but found no one in the car. The body of Wu Chung-kuo was found at a reef 300 meters off the park.
