Parents file complaint against art teacher

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The parents of an elementary school student yesterday filed a complaint against an art teacher who painted on their son’s face after he was unable to produce the color the teacher asked for, local media reported.

The second-grader, surnamed Hsu, was not allowed to wash off the color on his face until the end of the school day Nov. 7 as punishment for not mixing the right color his teacher, surnamed Fang, asked for.

The traumatized student refused to go back to Pailing Elementary School and was eventually transferred to another school.

The school said the teacher has apologized twice already to the parents and she admitted her fault in the matter. She claimed that she did not really mean to punish the student but did it “as a joke.”

The school said they have reprimanded Fang but stressed that she was still fit to teach.

While the parents of the student said several other parents also had complaints about the same teacher, the school said their complaint was the first one about Fang.

The parents filed the complaint as soon as their son revealed the ordeal, but the school had been reluctant to handle the case, so they turned to a city councilor who held a press conference yesterday to expose the case.
