TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tainan police yesterday discovered a woman's body at Tainan City's (台南市) Gold Coast (黃金海岸) — a day after the body of the woman's younger brother was found in the same area.
The Tainan City Fire Department at noon on Monday received a report from a citizen, who claimed to have discovered a corpse at the beachside near the Gold Coast's parking lot.
Firefighters and police arrived at the beach and discovered not only the male victim's body but also found two identification documents and personal belongings. Police later confirmed that the IDs belonged to the 45-year-old sister and the 44-year-old brother.
A restraining order issued to the man by his ex-wife and proof of low-income residency card were also discovered in the man's bag, police said.
Police said that the woman's body was found by Tainan firefighters yesterday morning at the concrete breakwater at the Gold Coast, adding that the location is not far away from where they discovered the male victim's body.
Tainan police further said that the woman had a medical history of mental disorders and was supposed to start serving a prison term of three years and seven months yesterday for drug possession. Police said the man allegedly suffered under a bad marriage.
Police went on to say that based on initial investigations, there is no sign of foul play, therefore the police suspect the pair might have decided to jump into the sea to kill themselves due to their personal circumstances.
The police said that whether or not the aforementioned situations were the reason that drove the pair to allegedly end their lives together is a question that remains unsolved at the moment, adding that they will further investigate the incident.
Police said that so far the family of the victims has not voiced any opinion regarding the cause of death, adding that the victims' bodies were sent to the Tainan City Funeral Parlor for autopsy.
