Train nicks excavator, no casualties but mass delays

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A southbound Chu-kuang Express train yesterday nicked an excavator while passing through a railroad crossing in Tainan's Liuying District (柳營區), causing no casualties but delaying 16 trains, the Taipei Railway Administration (TRA) said.

The TRA noted that the front of the train was damaged, adding that a total of 5,100 passengers were affected by the delays.

Xinying Station (新營火車站) officials said that the excavator was stuck between the railroad crossing gates when the southbound train drove pass at around 7:52 a.m.

The station said the train was not able to stop in time, adding that after the train nicked the excavator, it moved another 600 meters before coming to a halt.

The TRA said that 300 passengers were transported away from the scene and that the train was towed back to Xinying Station for repairs and inspection. Railway service was fully operational two hours after the incident, the TRA added.

The driver of the excavator, surnamed Huang, has been transferred to the Tainan District Prosecutors Office for further investigation. Huang is suspected of attempting to cross the tracks despite the impending arrival of an oncoming train, authorities said.
