Flag-raising ceremony in Tainan full of int'l flavor

TAIPEI--A flag-raising ceremony was held at the Tainan City Hall plaza Wednesday to mark the Republic of China's 101st birthday, bringing together local crowds and performers from 13 countries participating in a folklore festival in the southern city.

"All 13 of the foreign troupes taking part in the festival learned that Wednesday was our National Day, and they all agreed to attend the flag-raising ceremony," said an official from the city's Bureau of Cultural Affairs.

The performers, in Tainan for the festival being held from Oct. 6 to 14, brought with them the national flags of their countries, adding an international flavor to the occasion, the official said.

Bulgarian participants donned their performing costumes and presented traditional Bulgarian dances after the flag-raising ceremony, bringing the event to a climax.

Addressing the ceremony, Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te spoke of Taiwanese pitcher Chen Wei-yin's gritty performance in leading the Baltimore Orioles past the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore.
