Kenyan runners sweep Tainan Marathon

TAINAN, Taiwan -- Kenyan runners swept the men's and women's titles yesterday at the 2010 Tainan Ancient Capital International Marathon, which drew more than 7,000 participants from home and abroad competing in different divisions.

The marathon was divided into the 42.2-kilometer full marathon, the 21.1 km half marathon, the 10.4 km race and the 3 km race.

Kenya's Karanja Elijah Muturi emerged as the champion in the men's full marathon in a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 39 seconds, ahead of compatriot and three-time champion Bernard Mutai.

Mutai, who has been slowed down this year by a pulled muscle in his leg, said he was simply happy to participate in the race and cross the finish line.

Carolyne Chemutai won the women's full marathon in 2:49:06.
