County Speaker Wu had stroke, not on the run: wife

TAINAN, Taiwan -- The wife of Wu Chien-pao , speaker of the Tainan County Council, said yesterday to affirm that Wu was in hospital for stroke and not to run away from investigation on illegal baseball gambling, as suspected in recent media news.

The Banciao District Prosecutors Office had reportedly call Wu to appear in court as a major suspect on illegal sport gambling of the Chinese Professional Baseball League on Jan 25.

Wu was not able to appear in court after he is rushed to the hospital on Jan 22, according to local news report.

His wife Huang Tsui-yun stated that Wu is under hospital care at Chi Mei Medical Center for stroke-related problems and still has troubles speaking. She added Wu had being a patient for stroke at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital.

Wu's secretary Chen Jung-chin claimed that Wu had apparently fainted in the council building last Friday. He was sent to the emergency room at the time and is now under hospital care. He added Wu has a history of diabetes and high blood pressure.
