Taiwan's eighth national park to open in Tainan

TAINAN, Taiwan -- The Taijiang National Park — the eighth of its kind in Taiwan — will be officially inaugurated Dec. 28, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) announced Saturday.

Located in a coastal area of Tainan County in southern Taiwan, the park has a total planned area of 39,310 hectares, with land accounting for 4,905 hectares and sea accounting for 34,405 hectares, the ministry said.

The land area features tidal flats, sandbanks and wetlands that provide habitat for diverse flora and wildlife, including the endangered black faced spoonbill, the MOI said.

The sea area, meanwhile, covers the main shipping route taken by Taiwan's earliest immigrants from China more than 400 years ago.

The site of the park is considered the starting point of Taiwan's contemporary history and preserves Taiwan's oldest salt mining and aquaculture industries, according to the MOI.
