Mushroom smugglers busted in Nantou, Tainan

TAINAN, Taiwan -- The Chayi Coast Guard yesterday arrested six suspected smugglers and buyers for allegedly importing different kinds of gourmet mushrooms from mainland China and reselling them to Taiwan retailers.

The Coast Guard had been monitoring the traffickers for half a year before arresting them in both Nantou and Tainan yesterday, where they discovered approximately 24 tons of mushroom products worth more than NT$20 million.

All suspects admitted to participating in the smuggling after being questioned by police.

The smuggled mushroom products were not screened by customs officials and therefore might pose a threat to people's health, said a Coast Guard official.
