Illegal toy shotguns are seized in Taichung

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taichung District Prosecutors Office said Wednesday that a total of 194 toy shotguns circulating in the local military gaming market have been seized, with four suspects arrested for selling them.

The suspects will be charged with violating the Statue Governing the Control Over Guns, Ammunition, Knives and Weapons, the office said, explaining that the guns — the APS CAM870 model — were imported illegally from Hong Kong.

While survival game players usually use airsoft guns, which are less powerful, they could have accidentally bought the shotguns, which prosecutors said could literally kill.

A police task force first learned about the circulation of the shotguns and seized 36 of them several months ago, the prosecutors said.

The police then traced the source of the weapons, and seized the rest of them in a storehouse in New Taipei in June. The prosecutors urged gamers to turn in any of the illegal weapons in their possession.
