Woman detained for burning mother, throwing her in river

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A 30-year-old woman in Taichung is being detained by the courts for allegedly murdering her mother yesterday, after authorities found the mother's body by a ditch after suffering burns.

The suspect, surnamed Lin, allegedly doused her mother, aged 50, with gasoline and set her alight in the early afternoon. After lighting her mother on fire, the suspect pushed her off Ren-he Bridge in the city's Daya District. Rushing to the scene, police and firefighters dispatched the victim to the hospital but she did not recover from her injuries.

According to the local Apple Daily, witnesses observed Lin kneeling near the bridge and weeping after having pushed her mother off the bridge. She was sullen and speechless when approached by authorities, who took her into custody for further questioning.

Police later stated that Lin could not stand the sight of her mother's long-term suffering from a stroke. She had cared for her despite bouts of unemployment and insomnia. Her plan was to "liberate" her mother from her suffering and then take her own life. Her plan was foiled when witnesses discovered her, grief stricken by the bridge. Lin reportedly told authorities she regretted her actions.

City health officials stated that Lin had been suffering from emotional disorders. Officials added that during bimonthly scheduled appointments, Lin was always accompanied by her mother and both were observed to be on good terms with each other. However, the younger Lin had stopped attending her scheduled appointments, with health officials making house or phone calls, the last coming in August of this year. Officials stated they did not suspect any abnormalities during their visits.
