DPP Taichung candidate to set up volunteer registry

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Taichung mayor nominee Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) released his first campaign video yesterday, saying that he wants to integrate Taichung's volunteer resources and build a volunteer database.

The documentary's presentation took place yesterday morning. Nonprofit organization leaders, such as Hondao Senior Citizen's Welfare Foundation chief Lin Yi-ying (林依瑩), Taichung Lion Club's former chairman Liao Xiao-man (廖曉蔓) and members from the Green Dandelion Organization (綠色蒲公英志工隊) came to the presentation to show their support.

The film focused on Lin's interaction with the residents of Taichung since 2005, stressing his volunteer work, including how he engaged in the disaster relief after Typhoon Morakot. Lin said that the reason he chose volunteer policies as the first subject of his campaign is because he wants to integrate both governmental and social resources to build a volunteer database.

The volunteer database is a governmental platform that will match volunteers with nonprofit organizations. The matchmaking will be based on the specialization of the volunteer and whom they wish to help. "This might help gather more people who want to contribute their efforts to society, "Lin said.

Lin said he and his wife Liao Wan-ru (廖婉如) have been working as volunteers for a long time. They went to corporations and community groups in Taichung and raised NT$5 million for Kaohsiung's Social Affairs Bureau, helping victims of the explosions in that city.

Lin said that he wants to make Taichung a "city of hope" through the establishment of the volunteer database, hoping this matchmaking system can help develop and broaden volunteer services.
