CIB busts an online sports gambling ring, arrests nine

Authorities on May 14 cracked down on an online gambling ring, arresting a total of nine people, including the prime suspect, surnamed Chang (張), for allegedly profiting illegally from an online gambling website, according to the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB, 刑事警察局).

According to the CIB, law enforcement authorities recently received tips that the Taichung-based ring has been operating an online sports gambling website since last year.

Findings show that the online gambling site provided various sports for gamblers to bet on, including games of Major League Baseball, Nippon Professional Baseball, the National Basketball Association and European soccer leagues, among others.

Police indicated that the amount generated by illegal sports gambling is estimated to sit at billions of New Taiwan dollars since the website started operations last year.

In a raid coordinated between Changhua and Keelung police authorities, law enforcement officers arrested a total of nine suspects of the ring in Changhua and Keelung on May 14, the CIB said.

Investigators collected evidence from the scene, confiscating 10 computers and monitors.

The suspects have been transferred to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, said the CIB.
