Chinese woman questioned over disappeared boyfriend

TAIPEI -- A woman originally from China was being questioned by police in Taichung on Tuesday over the disappearance of her boyfriend under suspicious circumstances.

The 36-year-old man surnamed Lan was last seen on closed circuit TV (CCTV) when he returned to his apartment building in the central Taiwan city early Sunday morning, according to the police.

CCTV footage showed the man's girlfriend going in and out of the building several times between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning carrying oversized bags, police said.

The woman, who was not identified but is said to be a native of China, met the man eight years ago and the two started to live together. She had come to Taiwan after marrying a Taiwanese man, but the two were later divorced.

The police started to investigate the case after Lan's family came forward and said he failed to show up for work Monday. When Lan's parents went to the apartment, they could not find him or his pet dog.

Local news outlets reported that the woman contradicted herself during her accounts of what happened over the weekend, including whether she had seen Lan early Sunday morning.

Lan was not seen again after taking the elevator from the building's car park in the basement. His vehicle has not been moved.

The man is said to be the owner of a factory with an income of NT$1 million (US$33,300) per month.

It was not known for how long the woman would be questioned.
