Runaway murder convict sent back to Taiwan: CIB

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A runaway convict who killed a man in 1993 was extradited back to Taiwan on April 23, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said.

The man, surnamed Hsu, 39, was sentenced to a seven-year-prison term for murdering a man, surnamed Chiu, in November 1993, the CIB said in a released statement.

Hsu killed Chiu, a security guard at a Karaoke bar in Taichung, during a scuffle after Chiu tried to stop Hsu from having a dispute with other customers in the bar.

Hsu was given jail term by the Taichung High Court in May 2006.

In an attempt to avoid serving prison time, Hsu caught a plane and left Taiwan for China in June 2006, before he ultimately went to hide in Beijing.

The CIB recently received tips that Hsu was hiding at an apartment in Beijing's Chaoyang District. It then informed the Beijing authorities before they arrested Hsu.

In accordance with the Cross-strait Joint Fight against Crime and Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement, Hsu was deported back to Taiwan on April 23, the CIB said.
