TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A fishing boat from Donggang, Pintung County beached itself in Taitung after the pilot fell asleep while monitoring the boat yesterday.
The 82nd Division of the Coast Guard Administration's (CGA) Eastern Coastal Patrol Office stated that it had received a report concerning a beached boat at 1:35 a.m. yesterday, the location being near the popular tourist destination Sanxiantai (三仙台).
The division dispatched a team of rescuers, who hurried to the scene after receiving the report. The team rescued the ship's three crewmen after making sure that the ship was indeed stranded on the beach between Sanxiantai and Baishoulian.
The ship, named "Feng Hui Yi," had begun to leak oil at around 8 a.m.; the 82nd Division kept the spill at bay by using an oil containment boom and oil absorbent sheets, releasing the ship later in the afternoon.
According to Coast Guard personnel, the crew explained that "the ship was washed ashore after the pilot dozed off." Previous CGA records revealed that the Feng Hui Yi had been beached once before for the same reason.
