Car plate ACD-8888 auctioned for NT$36,000By Lauly Li, The China Post TAIPEI, Taiwan --The Taichung Motor Vehicles Office (TMVO, 台中監理所) recently held auctions of motor vehicle registration plates online, with a plate numeric code ending with 8888 having 17 bids and the final bid reaching NT$36,000, according to the TMVO yesterday.
March 8, 2013, 12:16 am TWN The TMVO said they held online auctions of motor vehicle registration plates ACD-0001 to ACD-9999 at the end of February. Among those plates, the reserve price for any registration identifier ending with four same numeric codes is NT$6,000. The rest is NT$3,000. The TMVO said registration plates consisting of four identical numerals are always popular. The number eight in Chinese represents the sound of the character which means “become rich” (發), thus plate ACD-8888 hit the highest price among online vehicle plate auctions. Only one car owner offered a price for car plate ACD-9999, the TMVO said, which surprised them because number nine in Chinese is a homonym for “long lasting” (久). The plate's final price was its reserve price of NT$6,000. Many people will avoid using the number four on car plates, as the pronunciation of “four” is a homonym for “death” in Chinese, the TMVO said, thus they removed all plates with number four in the auctions. The TMVO said only three car plates begins with “ACC” were sold. The TMVO said they inferred the reason was because the pronunciation of the letters is similar to “will die” in Taiwanese.
