Taichung mayor says city to host floral fair in 2018

TAIPEI -- Taichung Mayor Jason Hu announced yesterday that the central Taiwan city has won its bid to host a major international floral fair in 2018.

Taichung was granted the right to host the garden festival at a meeting of the International Association of Horticultural Producers in the Netherlands Tuesday, where Taichung Deputy Mayor Shyu Jong-shyong made a final push for the city's bid to members of the association, Hu said.

According to the local United Daily News, Hu described the floral festival as being on par with the 2010 International Flora Exposition that took place in Taipei.

Hu said the city government will take references from the Taipei expo, which recorded 8 million visitors, and will aim for an even higher attendance of 10 million.

However, what will set the Taichung fair apart from the Taipei festival is that it will take place in a less urban area — a 81-hectare site in the city's Houli District, Hu said.

Hu also said he expects the fair to create huge economic benefits for the city, likely creating NT$40 billion to NT$50 billion (US$1.35 billion to US$1.68 billion) in revenues.
