Foundation gives cakes to remote Taichung school

TAIPEI -- A social welfare foundation in Taichung sent love in the form of cake to a remote elementary school in the central city Saturday as part of its efforts to help underprivileged children celebrate the approaching Mother's Day.

The event, organized by the Maria Social Welfare Foundation, received help from Escape, a local car club, which helped the foundation bring the cakes baked by foundation members to Chung Keng Elementary School in the city's Dengshi District.

Chen Mei-ling, the foundation's president, said the school campus was completely destroyed in the Sept. 21 earthquake of 1999 but has now been reconstructed and has about 35 students.

The children are from single-parent families, are being raised by their grandparents or are the offspring of new immigrants, she said.

The foundation is planning to send 10,000 cakes to 93 remote elementary schools prior to Mother's Day, which falls on May 13 this year.
