The Taichung District Prosecutors Office investigated the case and pressed for Chien's detention. The Taichung District Court, however, released him on a NT$100,000 bail in June. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office later took up the investigation because prosecutors found that the case actually started earlier in the southern city where Chien and the other police officers allegedly cut a deal with an illegal gun owner. The officers promised to let the gun owner go in return for information on the source of the weapon. Based on the intelligence they obtained, the officers raided a Taichung underground weapon factory last January but found no firearm. The officers planted a gun they found earlier on the suspect to falsify crime-fighting results, Tainan prosecutors said. Taichung City Police Department said it will probably suspend the three detained police officers from duty. The police department, however, cannot deliver any disciplinary action on Chien, who had earlier resigned. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
