Updated Friday, March 19, 2010 9:41 am TWN, The China Post news staff Poisoner sentenced to life in prisonAccording to the Supreme Court verdict, the lesser sentence was carried out on account of Wang Chin-chan exhibiting signs of rehabilitation, becoming a devout Buddhist and avid reader of spiritual texts. Back in May 2005, in an attempt to extort money from drinks manufacturer Paolyta Co., Wang laced numerous bottles of energy drinks Bullwild and Paolyta B with cyanide and distributed the tainted beverages to 11 convenience stores in the Taichung area. In an odd move by Wang, the tampered bottles were slapped with stickers that read “I am poisonous, don't drink.” One person died from the poisonous beverage while three were left in critical condition. Police discovered unsent emails from Wang threatening to sue Paolyta Co. for US$330,000. The case dragged on for years. Wang received death penalties from the trials of first to third instance. The poisoner had made progress by the fourth trial, where he received a life sentence. The court of the fifth instance also gave Wang life imprisonment, citing the fact that he had made peace with the victims' families and that he was actively bettering himself through the readings of Buddhist texts. However, the defendant was still unsatisfied and appealed his case to the Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled that Wang was to be imprisoned for life. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
