CIB arrests thirteen Taichung loan sharks

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Thirteen Taichung men alleged to have controlled violent debt-collecting practices, have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), police said yesterday.

The group, led by a man surnamed Tseng, which reportedly used violence and even held victims captive against their will in order to collect debts, was arrested at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on Friday, Feb 5.

According to the CIB, the bureau received a report of two men having been badly beaten in a karaoke lounge at Yunlin County, in June last year. Tseng and at least 20 accomplices were alleged to have hit the men over unpaid debt.

After a four-month ongoing investigation, the CIB discovered Tseng to be a loan shark, who lent money with high levels of interest attached.

The CIB is still tracking the rest of the group.
