Taichung students fall sick from food poisoning

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Many students of two elementary schools in Taichung County were noticeably absent yesterday, in what was an alleged outbreak of collective food poisoning, local media reported.

Almost 100 children came down with food poisoning symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, with many requiring inpatient medical attention, the Central News Agency (CNA) said. The county government was informed of the incident after Ruei Suei Elementary School and Tan Yang Elementary School respectively observed 27 and 70 absences yesterday morning, the report noted.

Local officials alerted The Public Health Bureau (PHB) in Taichung City when it was discovered that the two schools shared the same lunchbox caterer, the report added. The PHB has asked the provider to momentarily suspend catering operations until its food is verified to be clear of contaminants. School administrators were cited as saying that they believe the menu offered on Sept. 25 was to blame.

Health officials have collected human specimen and food samples and sent them to laboratories for inspection, the results of which should be expected in a week, the PHB indicated. Nearly 780 students from the two schools were given Hawaiian fried rice, braised chicken cutlet, sweet potato sticks, crab meat patties and broccoli, said the CNA.
