Couple die in crash after engagement

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- A couple who officially became engaged yesterday died in a car crash five minutes away from home after the engagement.

Liao Deng-yi and Chen Ying-shuan were returning home after receiving permission to marry next month from the parents of the bride-to-be in Taichung when their car was impacted on the passenger side by another sedan driven by a man surnamed Li. Chen was crushed inside the wreckage and died on the scene, while Lao was critically injured and died in the hospital from internal bleeding. They were just five minutes away from their residence in Taoyuan.

Li had tested negative for alcohol consumption. Police preliminary investigation showed that Li was speeding but further probe is being conducted based on forensic evidence.
