Deputy Taichung mayor says social order improving

TAIPEI -- Deputy Taichung Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi said yesterday that although the city has the highest overall crime rate in Taiwan, it has also seen the biggest improvement.

Hsiao made the remarks after National Police Agency announced recently the overall crime rate of 25 cities and counties in Taiwan, which showed Taichung City had the highest crime rate in 2007, the fifth consecutive year it finished last in the rankings.

The overall crime rate was based on the calculation of violent crime, burglaries, theft, extortion, assault and fraud. Taichung had the highest rate of burglaries, motorcycle thefts, and robberies among the 25 administrative districts.

Hsiao said that the city’s social order has been improving, noting that “in the first six months of this year, the number of criminal cases dropped by 23 percent from the same period last year. The improvement was also the biggest in the nation.”

He noted that a program to install a monitoring system at major intersections has had a positive effect on improving social order, adding that more than 700 criminal cases were expected to be broken through the monitoring system this year.
