Dog dropping cleaners offered in Taichung City

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- The Taichung city government has begun offering dog dropping cleaners made of waste newspaper at public trash cans in an effort to help keep the central city clean, the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.

The bureau came up with the idea of providing the cleaning sheets at 59 public trash cans in the city after receiving a rising number of complaints from local residents about dog droppings polluting the environment, according to a statement from the bureau.

The bureau has issued 1,235 warning tickets and 11 fines since it began a crackdown May 25 on people who fail to clean up the mess left by their dogs on the street, the bureau noted. Those who fail to carry equipment to clean up their dog mess will face fines from NT$600 (US$19.7) to NT$3,000, while those who fail to clean up their dogs’ droppings will be fined between NT$1,200 and NT$6,000, the bureau warned.
