Man proven to be thief after trying on left shoe

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- A man proved to be the suspect involved in a theft that occurred at a residence in Taichung County, as his left foot fully matched that of a shoe left behind at the site of the would-be crime, according to police.

The suspect, 43 and named Chen Cheng-lung, allegedly stole into the room of a private residence in central county of Taichung, attempting to steal something at 5:00 p.m. on Feb. 9.

But his theft attempt failed, because he was blocked by family members there, and police soon rushed to the scene to question the suspect. Finally, however, he was freed, because the police failed to find any stolen items after conducting a thorough check of the suspect’s clothes and body.

On the following day, a young member of the family discovered that a jade bracelet, a golden bracelet, a gold ring, a watch and NT$32,000 in banknotes, which had been stolen by the thief, had been dropped in a corner on the third floor of their residential unit. In addition, a left shoe, a pair of gloves and a handtool were discovered, also left behind in the corner.

Chen was again summoned by police to try on the shoe for size, and it fully fit his left foot, prompting him to confess to the theft.

The police light-heartedly likened the situation to the tale of Cinderella.
