Car owner seeks gov’t to pay for damage from tree resin

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Mercedes-Benz car owner in Taichung, central Taiwan, yesterday claimed that he would seek compensation from the Taichung City Government for the loss his car suffered from being “disfigured” by resin falling from flame goldrain trees planted on the roadside in the city.

The owner, identified as Wang Po-jen, made the remarks at a press conference held yesterday, pointing to sticky stains spread on his car. The sticky stains were caused by resin generated by said trees.

Wang said when first finding his car body spread with an unknown sticky substance some two months ago, he initially suspected it was mischief. To counter, Wang said he adopted a plastic car cover, yet still found similar sticky stains spread on the cover.

Eventually, Wang discovered that the flame goldrain trees grown on the Wenhsin South 3rd Road were to blame for the undesirable sticky stains.

Wang said he had to spend NT$12,000 to have his car body re-coated after being “disfigured” by resin from the trees.

He stressed that he would donate the compensation money to welfare charity organizations if he successfully wins compensation.

In response, a relevant ranking official with the Taichung City Government said that there are 25 kinds of trees planted on the sides of roads in Taichung City, and the number of flame goldrain trees alone reaches some 3,000. He stressed he hasn’t heard of any similar compensation cases before, and that the city government would investigate further to better deal with the case.
