Explosion kills one GI, injures officer

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- One soldier was killed and a military officer sustained multiple injuries yesterda

y in an accidental explosion of a mortar bomb at an ammunition depot of the Combined Logistics Command (CLC) in central Taiwan.

The CLC under the National Defense (MND) issued a statement saying that the accident occurred around 10:35 a.m. when the two were disassembling the bomb at the depot located at Shinsheh Township in Taichung County.

Second Private Wang Chao-shin died on the scene while Lieutenant Lin Chien-hong suffered injuries to various parts of his body. Lin's life is in no danger and he is presently recovering at a military hospital in Taichung.

Gen. Chin Nai-jeh, CLC commanding general, had called on the families of both victims to express his condolences. He also promised to make proper compensation to the soldiers' families and start an investigation into the accident.

The CLC, headquartered in Nangang of Taipei City, said bomb disassembling is part of the renovation operations at the facilities. It has temporarily suspended the operation and sealed the scene pending an independent probe.
