TAIPEI -- The Water Resources Agency will set up a solar photovoltaic system at a reservoir in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, as part of efforts to facilitate the implementation of the government's renewable energy development policy, the agency said Wednesday.
The photovoltaic system will be installed on the slope of the Mudan Dam, the agency's Southern Region Water Resources Office said in a statement, adding that the process of securing contractors for the construction project will be completed by the end of February next year.
The planned photovoltaic system will have an installed capacity of 2 million watts, the office added.
Meanwhile, the office is also recruiting contractors for a plan to build a small hydroelectric generator at the reservoir. It said the planned facility is scheduled to be completed and to begin commercial operations in 2018.
The electricity generating capacity of the facility is estimated to reach an average 3.159 million watts in one year, the office said.
Low-carbon green energy is one of the major policies proposed by the administration of President Tsai Ing-wen, which has vowed to make Taiwan nuclear-free by 2025.
