Man attempts to woo ex-wife with firearms

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tainan police on Saturday confiscated customized firearms from the rented apartment of a man surnamed Li, who was apprehended on July 25 after trying to get back with his ex-wife through text-message threats and the use of customized firearms and smoke-grenades.

According to police, Li, 39, and his ex-wife, surnamed Tsai, divorced in April this year. Li has since tried to get his ex-wife back, and following a series of failed text message threats in June, he resorted to throwing two hand grenades into the basement of Tsai's place of work, located in Tainan's Anping District, on July 15. Reportedly, Tsai's coworkers were horrified and left the building in panic.

Li allegedly returned to the same location on July 23 with a customized pistol, and later fled the scene after discharging a series of bullets. Following the retrieval of two bullets at the scene, authorities organized a special task force and arrested Li on July 25.

Authorities found one homemade grenade, 95 rounds of ammunition for Li's customized guns, 23 bullet shells, one gas rifle and three smoke-grenades at Li's location. Authorities also retrieved tools that Li uses to turn his gas-powered firearms into customized weapons.

During a search of Li's rented apartment in the West Central District of Tainan, authorities confiscated two customized pistols and 17 rounds of ammunition. Li admitted to altering and customizing the pistols and ammunition, as well as to sending threatening messages to his former wife and to throwing smoke grenades and firing at his ex-wife's office. Following interrogations, authorities charged Li with counts of violations of gun control laws, intimidation and offenses against public safety.
