Dapeng Bay race lead-up draws over 10,000 athletes

TAIPEI -- More than 10,000 runners have registered for the 2014 Heroes Marathon Challenge at Dapeng Bay, a new event that will debut August 2 in Taiwan's southernmost county of Pingtung.

Officials of the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area (DPBNSA) said the 3,000 spots in the 12-kilometer challenge category were filled within 24 hours after online registration opened at 8 p.m. on April 30.

In addition to the 12-kilometer challenge, runners have the option to participate in the main event — the 42.2-km marathon, a 24-kilometer run, 24-km lovers' category and a two-person marathon category.

So far, more than 10,000 people have registered for the races.

The DPBNSA, which is coordinating the event, said it was expecting high participation in the marathon, which will follow a bikeway around the bay in Tungkang.
